One bill would increase the minimum age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21 years old, Governor Kathy Hochul stated on Tuesday.
Following two massacres, state lawmakers are expected to consider these proposals. One was at Buffalo’s supermarket, New York where 10 were killed, and another at Uvalde school, Texas which saw 19 victims as well as two teachers being murdered. Both cases involved an 18-year-old gunman.
Hochul stated in a statement that two mass shootings have occurred in Buffalo and Texas in the past month. This has shaken the nation and brought to light the need for urgent action to avoid future tragedy.
On Tuesday, the victims of Uvalde’s shooting rampage will receive their first funeral service. It was for two 10-year old girls who were killed during the attack.
