PARIS (Reuters), – French transport unions celebrated Tuesday’s success in their strike at the Champions League final, Real Madrid v Liverpool. The French government claimed that the strike contributed to public disorder which marred this event.

While the government has mostly blamed Liverpool for ticket fraud and Liverpool’s treatment of their fans Saturday, they also claimed that the Transport Strike contributed to the overcrowding near Stade de France.

The joint declaration of CGT and UNSA, representing the workers of Paris’ RER public transport network and RATP private transport networks said that the “success of the strike during Champions League final resulted a clear demonstration of strength for the trade unites.”

Unions threatened to strike again on Friday, in order to co-occur with the France versus Denmark Nations League soccer game. They want improved working conditions and wages.

Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister described the scene outside Stade de France as extremely upsetting. Tom Werner is the chairman of Liverpool and demanded an apology.

Gerald Darmanin, French Interior Minister, stated that Liverpool provided paper tickets to their supporters, and not electronic. This allowed them to commit “massive fraud at an industrial scale”.

Crowd trouble is now a major political topic ahead of the next month’s parliamentary election. It has embarrassed France which will host the Rugby World Cup 2023 and Olympic Games 2024.
