WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The South Korean supergroup BTS will visit the White House to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday. They plan to discuss hate crime targeting Asians.

Last week, the White House declared that Biden would be visiting BTS to discuss “the importance of diversity and inclusiveness” and BTS’ platform as youth ambassadors.

With an increase in hate crime against Asian Americans during the past year, May’s Recognition of Asian American/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Day is coming to an abrupt halt.

As politicians and pundits encourage Americans, amongst other tensions to point fingers at China, the attacks against Asian-Americans have increased.

The media outlets will not have access to the meeting between Boy Band and Biden. Officials from the White House said that BTS members would make short remarks at the White House’s daily news briefing.

K-pop is known for its lyrics that aim to empower children. The K-pop stars have an older fan base, which allows them to spend more on a younger generation who is socially aware and can use the internet to their advantage.

Fans rallied behind the band’s #MatchAMillion online fundraising campaign in June 2020. This was to support social justice causes across the United States. In just one day it raised $1 million, which is equal to the amount donated by the band to Black Lives Matter.

Big Hit Music, the group’s manager, said that it was honored by being invited to visit the White House.

Big Hit Music declared, “As South Korean artists, we hope to discuss various topics, including inclusion, diversity and anti-Asian hate crime, culture, art, and culture.”
