UNITED NATIONS – The United States will push again for U.N. sanctions against North Korea if the country conducts a seventh nuclear attack, despite resistance from Russia and China. Linda Thomas Greenfield, the Ambassador of the United Nations to Linda Thomas Greenfield stated this Tuesday.
Last week, Russia and China vetoed an American-led effort to increase U.N. sanctions against North Korea for its ballistic missile launch. This publicly split the U.N. Security Council since 2006.
Thomas-Greenfield stated that North Korea “actively prepares to perform a nuclear test.” She said Tuesday that if this happens, the United States will “absolutely” press for additional U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang.
She stated that first of all, we must enforce any sanctions we already have. “And, we certain – just as we tried in the previous resolution – we will push for further sanctions.”
The Security Council has increased sanctions on Pyongyang over the last 16 years. The Security Council tightened its sanctions on Pyongyang last year.
China and Russia are pushing since then for the lifting of humanitarian sanctions.
