WASHINGTON (Reuters] – A protester for abortion rights chained his self to a perimeter wall outside the U.S. Supreme Court Monday in protest of its decision to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade ruling, which allowed the procedure to be legalized nationwide.

He secured a U-shaped, heavy-duty bicycle lock around his neck and chanted, “Overturn Roe!” Hell no! As he was being shouted at by a group anti-abortion protesters, holding signs that included slogans such as “Protection at Conception,” a crowd of them marched past him.

He remained attached to the fence for approximately 15 minutes before being removed by police. The man held up a green wrap with the address to an abortion rights organization’s website. A video of the incident was posted on Twitter by the group (NYSE.) The man claimed to be Guido Reichstadter, a Miami resident. He said that the attack on Americans rights led him to the green bandana.

He said, “I am doing this as the initial step. It’s kind of throwing down the gauntlet. The first step in an appeal to Americans who support abortion rights — and that’s most of us — to get out of inaction, passivity, and sit back, and enter nonviolent resistance.”

A ruling is expected in this case, which concerns Republican-backed Mississippi abortion restrictions. It will take place by June end.

Since last month’s leak of a draft opinion by the Supreme Court’s conservative minority that would reverse the landmark decision, abortion rights disputes have been raging across the country.

This ruling would allow states to ban abortion. It is a goal shared by many Republican elected officials as well as religious conservatives.
