SYDNEY – A judge in Australia ordered Google to pay A$715,000 (515,000) Monday to a former senior lawyer. He was convicted of being a YouTube commentator who had used a “relentless and racist, vilificatory abusive, defamatory campaign”.

Federal Court held that Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:) Inc owned YouTube and earned thousands by hosting two videos against the deputy premier from Australia’s largest state New South Wales. These videos, posted late 2020, were viewed over 800,000.

Jordan Shanks was a political commentator and questioned John Barilaro’s integrity. The judge Steve Rares said that he called Barilaro “corrupt”, without any evidence.

Rares stated that Barilaro quit politics after he had been “traumatised” by Google and Mr Shanks campaigns and it resulted in him having to leave office before he could finish.

I found Google’s behavior in this proceeding inappropriate and unacceptable.”

Google representatives were not available immediately for comment.

Shanks’ spokesperson, who was co-defendant in Google, before he and Barilaro settled last year, wasn’t immediately available to comment.
