(Reuters.) – Paramount Pictures has been sued by Monday’s family members for copyright infringement in relation to “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel that inspired the film starring Tom Cruise.

A Los Angeles Federal Court complaint claims that Paramount Global failed to acquire the rights to Ehud Yanay’s 1983 article, “Top Guns”, from his family prior to publishing the “derivative” sequel.

Shosh Yonay (Israeli) and Yuval Yonay (Israeli), respectively, claimed that Paramount intentionally ignored the fact that copyright was reverted back to them in January 2020. Paramount is “thumbing its nose at federal copyright laws.”

Paramount has not yet responded to inquiries for comment.

Unspecified damages are sought, including profits from Top Gun: Maverick and Paramount’s inability to distribute the film or any sequels.

“Top Gun Maverick”, this year’s most successful box office smash, generated $291 million in North America in the first 10 days and $548.6 millions globally.
