(Reuters) – Progressive Jessica Cisneros requested a recount Monday in her race to defeat U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar. Cuellar is a moderate Texas Democrat and a strong opponent of abortion rights. She trailed him by less than 300 votes last month in the primary election.

Cisneros was 29 years old and had reached a runoff in the March primary with Cuellar. This district included Laredo close to the Texas-Mexico border. But, Cisneros eventually trailed Cuellar. This was their third meeting.

Cisneros declared that the movement was not about one candidate. He made the statement in a first Texas Tribune post, which was then retweeted and cited by the candidate. We are filing for recount because our community is not done fighting.

Cuellar (66) is the only House Democrat who opposes abortion rights. Abortion-rights groups spent $160,000 to support Cisneros campaign.

After a leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion, it became clear that the race was becoming more urgent in recent weeks. It indicated that a majority (of nine) justices would be set to repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that allowed abortion nationwide.

Cuellar didn’t immediately reply to a request of comment. However, Cuellar stated that Cisneros would put at risk public safety and harm the local economy by cutting funding for law enforcement. This is a district in which many residents work for border patrol agents.

Cisneros is now distancing herself from the previous calls to end U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Analysts have warned that the win of Cisneros in November’s general election could hurt Democrats’ chances of holding it. This is when Republicans seek to control the House of Representatives.
