U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have increased their guidance on monkeypox, urging travellers to wear face masks as the number of cases worldwide exceeds 1,000.
The CDC increased its alert to a level 2On Monday, the government urged people to take “enhanced precautions” in order to stop the spread of the disease, which reached 29 countries that are not endemic. The highest level alert — level 3 — would caution against non-essential travel.
The public health agency said that the threat to the general population remains low. However, it urges those who are afflicted to stay away from people with genital or skin lesions as well as people with dead or sick animals. An alert is issued for those who are showing symptoms, including anemia. unexplained skin rash or lesionsAvoid contact with others, and reach out to your healthcare provider for assistance.
Monkeypox, a rare form of the virus monkeypox, can be caused by an infection. Symptoms include rashes. fever, headaches, muscle ache, swelling and backpain.
It’s usually endemic in Central and West African nations, however, the latest outbreaks across North America and Europe have confused health officials and raised concerns about community spread.
On Monday there were 1,019 cases confirmed or suspected of monkeypox in 29 countries. according to the CDC.U.K. with 302 cases of suspected or confirmed infection is the country that has registered most. Spain is next with 198 cases, Portugal has 153 and Canada 80.
The source of the virus has been a topic of intense research by health experts. It is thought that the disease was caused by travel to endemic regions. Technical lead of the World Health Organization for monkeypox said WednesdayIt is possible that the virus was transmitting unnoticed in countries not affected by it for several weeks, months, and possibly even years.
U.S. detects two monkeypox strains
The West African virus was the source of this current outbreak, and it has been reported to cause less severe disease than other strains. It also has a lower fatality rate at 1%.
However, the CDC said FridayHealth experts are confused by the fact that there are at least two variants of monkeypox genetically different currently in circulation in America. So far, the U.S. reported only 30 cases.
Jennifer McQuiston from the CDC’s High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology Division stated that the variants are very similar. However, genetic analysis has shown them to be not connected.
McQuiston indicated that McQuiston believes the viruses originated in two distinct instances, where it spread from humans to animals in Africa.
CNBC’s Professor Eyal, an infectious disease specialist from Sheba Medical Centre, said Monday that spread of the virus was not surprising given increased international travel and the interaction between people and animals.
Leshem explained that diseases once localized are now more likely to spread across borders and continents.
“In the meantime, interactions between people and animals have increased. The climate change has made some animals more likely to come into contact with people, and you’ll see more cases of this type of disease,” he said.
Monkeypox is a mild infection that usually resolves in 2 to 4 days. the U.S. said MondayThe vaccine is being sent to high-risk patients who had received 36,000 doses. Some European countries including the U.K. SpainSimilar measures were taken by other countries to stop the spread of the virus.
While monkeypox can be transmitted sexually, it isn’t considered to be a sexually transmitted illness. However, most cases of the disease have spread through sex. men who have sex with menAccording to the CDC, it is a staggering 9%.
