(Reuters] – The latest move by a parallel government against military rule in Myanmar is to form its own police force. This was in an attempt to stop the junta from governing after a coup last January.

Myanmar is in chaos since Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown as the elected government. This ended 10 years of tentative democracy, and has sparked opposition from groups seeking to make the military cede power.

Military has called its enemies “terrorists”, which includes the shadow National Unity Government, an alliance of anti-junta organizations of which many are hiding out or living in exile.

With a accepted police force, the NUG stated that it is prepared to accept responsibility for domestic enforcement.

The NUG stated that the purpose of the meeting was to “take lawful action against terrorist military councils for committing war crimes, human rights violations and terror acts against people.”

There isn’t yet any information on when or how the NUG will form and operate a force of police officers, nor how many people it would recruit. Reuters was unable to reach spokespersons from the NUG and its ruling military council for comment.

Since last year the NUG led a campaign in order to raise funds for and to suppress military’s attempts to consolidate power. It included tax boycotts, overseas bond issue and mock sales of Min Aung Hlaing’s house.

Last year the NUG called upon the public to protest the military through a “people’s defence war”. They announced the formation of People’s Defence Forces. These forces have fought soldiers in the countryside.

According to United Nations estimates, around 700,000.000 people were forced from their homes by violence and instability since the coup.
