COLOMBO (Reuters – Sri Lanka’s cash-strapped state will need $5 billion to meet its basic needs, which includes fuel imports of $3.3 billion, said the prime minister on Tuesday.

Ranil Wickremesinghe said that “Only establishing an economic stability is not enough. We have to restructure our entire economy.” He was preparing an interim budget in order to restore balance to Sri Lanka’s ailing public finances.

With 22 million people, the island country is in its worst economic depression for 70 years. Imports are being impeded by a lack of foreign money.
