This June 6 article corrects President Salvador Jorge Blanco’s 1982-1986 tenure, and not 2002-2006.

SANTO DOMINGO – Authorities claim that Orlando Jorge Mera (Dominican Republic’s Environment Minister) was killed in an attack on his office Monday.

Homero Figueroa was a spokesperson for the President’s Office. He posted a Twitter video on Monday afternoon claiming that Miguel Cruz had been arrested.

Figueroa claimed Cruz was a childhood friend and minister without revealing a motive.

Journalists were told by employees of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources that at most seven shots came from the interior of the building. Shortly thereafter, officers arrived at the scene.

Jorge Mera (55-year-old) is a lawyer and son of Salvador Jorge Blanco who served as President from 1982 through 1986.

His wife Patricia Selma Villegas and their two children are his survivors. Orlando Jorge Villegas is his son and a member of the Modern Revolutionary Party.

Figueroa indicated that both the president of the United States and the government were available to ministers’ families.
