LONDON, (Reuters) – British prosecutors announced Wednesday that they have authorized charges against Harvey Weinstein, a former Hollywood producer. The two counts are for indecent assault on a woman committed 26 years ago.
Rosemary Ainslie from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Special Crime Division stated, “Charges were authorized against Harvey Weinstein,” at 70.
Weinstein spokespeople were unavailable for immediate comment.
CPS stated that the alleged attack took place in London on August 26, 1996. According to London’s Metropolitan Police, the woman being accused is now in her 50s.
Weinstein currently serves a 23 year sentence in prison in the United States. He was convicted of 2020 assaulting Mimi Haleyi, a former assistant producer, and raping Jessica Mann (an aspiring actor).
A New York appels court upheld the conviction last week.
This verdict is considered to be a significant landmark in #MeToo, where many women have come forward and accused dozens of men of sexual misconduct. Many consider Weinstein’s 2017 accusations to be the catalyst for the #MeToo movement.
Ainslie added that “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone concerned that criminal prosecutions against the defendant remain active” and that they are entitled to a fair trial.
