(Reuters] – China’s market share on Russia’s smartphone market grew dramatically in May after manufacturers such as Apple (NASDAQ;) and Samsung(KS:) paused any new Russian sales and Western sanctions weighed heavily on Russia.

Based on data provided by MTS mobile network, Honor, Realme, Xiaomi and Realme were the top three Chinese smartphone manufacturers in Russia for May 2022. That’s up from 28% last year.

South Korea’s Samsung dropped its market leadership spot, selling 14% of the devices, 28% less than last year. Apple’s share dropped from 12% down to 9%.

MTS reported that overall smartphone sales fell 26% year over year due to Western sanctions and disruptions in supply chains.

Apple and Samsung had stopped sales of new Russian products after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February. But retailers were able to sell existing stock.

In a scheme called “parallel imports”, the Kremlin also allowed Russian companies to send in certain products including smartphones without permission from license holders.
