(Reuters] – New York’s federal prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation into the question of whether or not there was a crime. Wells Fargo (NYSE:) & Co violated federal laws by conducting fake job interviews, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The bank announced earlier this week that it would be suspending a policy that required recruiters to interview diverse candidates. This follows another New York Times report that said these interviews are often faked and carried out even though the job was promised to someone else.

Reuters reached the bank for comment but they did not respond immediately.
