(Reuters) – After a decade trading as Facebook (NASDAQ), the social media company is shedding its corporate identity and will begin trading on Thursday under the ticker symbol META.
Meta Platforms Inc changed its name to the Metaverse in October 2021. This is a virtual shared realm that Meta Platforms Inc hopes will be successful mobile.
Mark Zuckerberg is Meta’s cofounder and CEO. He founded Facebook in 2004 at Harvard from his dorm room as a way to allow students to communicate via the Internet.
Facebook was a social networking site that would soon become a major part of people’s lives. The company has almost three billion monthly active users and will eventually include Whatsapp, Instagram, and other popular social media platforms.
Two decades later, the company continues to invest billions of dollars in the metaverse. It is a futuristic vision of virtual environments that allow users to work, play and socialize.
Art Hogan of National Securities, New York said that companies that alter their ticker or name are often trying to indicate that something fundamental has changed in their underlying business model.
“I don’t know if this really makes a difference.” Hogan said that they still use the names Google (NASDAQ:), and Facebook.
Meta shares fell nearly 42% in this year’s battle with regulators and lawmakers over the company’s market power, algorithmic decision-making and its enforcement of abuses.
