Thursday was the announcement of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NASDAQ:). It will upgrade its probe into Tesla (NASDAQ;) to include 830,000 full-autonomous vehicles. These cars are almost identical to all Teslas sold in the U.S.A since 2014’s model year.

The agency says the investigation will evaluate additional data, vehicle performance and “explore the degree to which Autopilot and associated Tesla systems may exacerbate human factors or behavioral safety risks undermining the effectiveness of the driver’s supervision.”

In August, an initial investigation started to examine the performance and safety of the system for 765,000 vehicles following a number of collisions involving stopped emergency vehicles. This investigation evolved into an engineering assessment, which is required before potentially seeking to compel recalls.

NHTSA launched special investigations into 35 accidents involving Tesla cars since 2016. These incidents involved advanced driver assistance systems. There have been 14 fatalities, three of which were in California’s crash that killed them last month.

The NHTSA original report stated that most crashes occurred after darkness fell. Scene control measures used to stop them included flares and first-responder vehicles lights.
