Russia said Thursday that Gazprom was not likely to cut European gas supplies. The Russian government also stated its plans to force buyers to pay in roubles for the gas it sells.
Gazprom cut supply to Denmark’s Orsted and Shell (LON) Energy in its contract to deliver gas to Germany. The Dutch Gas Trader GasTerra was also affected by Gazprom refusing to pay roubles for Russian gas under the new rouble scheme.
In April and May, gas payments in accordance with the new scheme were due under this arrangement, which was established in response Western sanctions.
Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, said that everyone not being supplied is now receiving Russian gas.
Peskov stated that the system was functioning and those who are able to receive gas are operating under the new system.
When asked if he expected any new gas reductions, he replied: “No.”
France, Italy, and Germany have indicated that they will engage in Moscow’s payment program to maintain supply. This is because Europe intends to reduce its dependency on Russia over the coming years.
