STOCKHOLM (Reuters), – Ericsson, (BS:) reported on Thursday that the U.S. regulator for securities opened an inquiry into allegations detailed in Ericsson’s 2019 Iraq investigation.

According to the Swedish equipment manufacturer, it is fully cooperating with US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), although it was still too early for the company’s response.

Ericsson admitted in February that it was subject to internal investigations and had made payments to Islamic State militants in Iraq. It said the misconduct “started at most back in 2011”.

Ericsson was fined by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2019. This settlement involved another case of bribery. The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating Ericsson’s handling of this investigation. They are expected to issue a fine.

According to Mads Rosendal of Danske Bank Credit Research, “In these instances it is not unusual for multiple branches to the U.S authorities to get involved and this would not be something that we would expect a significant change any final penalty or settlement.”

It could lead to additional delays as more stakeholders are involved.
