WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The premiere of six congressional hearings on January 6, 2021’s attack on the U.S. Capitol was televised on Thursday.

In its investigation of the Jan 6th Attack, the Select Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives included audiotaped testimony by senior Trump White House and Campaign officials.

Below is a collection of quotations:

Bennie Thompson is the Chair of the Committee. Below are excerpts from his opening speech:

“We cannot sweep under the carpet what occurred. American citizens deserve answers. Therefore, this evening I stand before you not as a Democrat but rather as an American who swore to uphold the Constitution. It doesn’t just protect Republicans or Democrats. It covers all of us.”

So tonight and for the next several weeks we will be reminding you about the real events of that day. However, our efforts must go beyond looking forward. Because our democracy remains in danger. It is still possible to conspire against the will and freedom of the people.

“January 6th, and the lies that lead to insurrection have placed two and a quarter centuries of constitutional democracy at stake. Watch out for the world’s reaction to what you do.

U.S. Representative Liz Cheney:

Trump thought his Capitol supporters, I quote, were doing the right thing. As he pleaded for his staff to stop the mob, he said this.

“This point is undisputed. The reason that those who invaded the Capitol and confronted police for hours was President Trump’s statement to them, that the election was stolen and that they were the rightful President. Trump summoned his mob, assembled them and set the flame to this attack.

“All Americans should remember… this fact that President Donald Trump, in the early morning hours of January 6, 2017, intended to stay president of America.”

Cheney explained that “as you’ll see in our hearings the White House received certain reports in days leading to Jan. 6, including during President Trump’s Ellipse rally (nearly the White House),” indicating that there were elements within the crowd preparing violence at the Capitol.

The White House staff was aware that President Trump would entertain conspiracy theories and make it a point to get his goals. The White House staff knew that Trump needed to be removed from the support of all those who encouraged him. They understood that Donald Trump was far too dangerous to leave alone, even though he had left office Jan. 20. 20.”

Cheney quotes Greg Jacob, an ex-counsel to Vice President Mike Pence to Trump-allied lawyer John Eastman:

Your bullshit is a blessing. “We are under siege.”

Video: Former Attorney General William Barr

“I stated that I was against the notion of declaring the election stolen and publishing this material which I refer to as the bullshit. It was something I refused to do. … It’s impossible for us to live in an environment where we allow the incumbent government to remain in power, despite the fact that it believes, with no evidence whatsoever, that the election was fraudulent.

Video testimony by Ivanka Trump (ex-daughter of President Trump):

“I respect Attorney General Barr. “So I understood what he said.”
