The debut of “Jurassic World: Dominion”, which generated more than $143million in ticket sales, saw it rise to the top at the domestic box-office.
Since opening this month, it has received $245.8million internationally, making its total global reach just below $390 million.
EntTelligence reports that 10.8 Million moviegoers attended the “Dominion,” representing 66% to the total moviegoing population.
The domestic audience accounted for 26% in “Top Gun: Maverick”, which brought in $50 million more in ticket sales in its third weekend in America and Canada.
“Maverick,” which has been attracting audiences for years, saw a drop of 44% in ticket sales from its first and third weekends. It is now the second consecutive weekend that Tom Cruise’s sequel has been strong at the box-office. Only 32% of ticket sales dropped between the first week and the second. Films typically see a drop of between 50% and 70% between their first and second weekends.
Paul Dergarabedian is a senior media analyst with Comscore. “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to be a popular film despite stiff competition from Jurassic World: Dominion.” This is the ideal scenario for movie theatres to have two blockbusters simultaneously on their screens, generating buzz and excitement around the theater experience.
However, the game of diminishing returns for “Jurassic World: Dominion” could be more serious. This blockbuster movie has received overwhelmingly negative reviews from criticsTickets could drop sharply after the opening weekend, if there is a lack of word-of-mouth from moviegoers.
Disclosure: CNBC is owned by Comcast. NBCUniversal was the distributor of “Jurassic World: Dominion”.
