(Reuters). -Two persons were killed and two others injured in a shooting at a suburb of Alabama church Thursday evening. A suspect was then taken into police custody.

According to Captain Shane Ware, the Vestavia Hills Police department, the shooting took place at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

According to him, “A single suspect entered a small church gathering and began shooting.”

Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham that is home to approximately 40,000 residents, lies seven miles southwest of Birmingham.

Ware claimed that the attacker was being held in police custody. There was no indication that the police had any motive.

Reverend Kelley Hudlow stated that the shooting was a devastating event for all of society, and not only for church members. Hudlow claimed that none of the church’s staff were injured in the shooting.
