REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/File PhotoLONDON, Reuters -The Kremlin stated Monday that U.S. President Joe Biden’s comment that Vladimir Putin couldn’t remain in power was alarming. This response came after a call by the United States to end Putin’s 22 year rule.
Biden spoke at the conclusion of his speech to Warsaw’s crowd on Saturday, “For God’s sake, that man cannot stay in power.” The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a part of an even larger conflict between democracy or autocracy, he said.
Biden was asked by the White House to clarify his comments. On Sunday, he said that he wasn’t calling for regime reform.
When asked about Biden’s comments, which were not covered on Russian state TV, Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, said that it was “an alarming statement.”
Peskov said to reporters, “We will continue monitoring the statements of U.S. President in the best attentive way.”
Since Boris Yeltsin’s resignation in 1999, Putin has been Russia’s supreme leader. According to the Kremlin, Putin was democratically elected and the Russian people decide who is Russia’s leader.
Biden’s comment could have fueled accusations made by Russian top officials that the United States wants to overthrow Putin.
Dmitry Medvedev was the former president of Russia. Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev stated that Washington seeks to destabilize Russia. He also said that Washington would like to see a “colour revolution” similar to what happened in Georgia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet countries.
Putin said that Russia’s “specially military operation” in Ukraine was needed because the United States used the country as a threat to Russia, and Moscow was forced to defend itself against persecution by Ukraine of Russian-speaking speakers.
Ukraine dismissed claims of persecution, claiming it was a pretext to invade.
