(Reuters). – This week’s launch of a black-and white melancholy Instagram alternative that allows users to share sad images of themselves could be in Russia. Its creators say it is being launched to show sadness over the death of other popular platforms like Instagram.

Russia has blocked Instagram access from March 14th, and Meta Platforms Inc was found guilty by the Russian government of “extremist activities”. Moscow is fighting to restrict information flow to Big Tech following its February 24th deployment of tens-of-thousands of troops in Ukraine.

Instagram claimed that the block would impact 80 million Russian users. People can access Instagram’s photo-sharing platform via a Virtual Private Network. However, there are now domestic options available, including ‘Grustnogram’ or ‘Sadgram in English.

The platform’s website stated that users could post sad images of themselves, and then show them to their sad friends.

The app’s user interface was shown in an image. It showed a woman wearing a fur jacket standing before St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square. Search for your sad compatriots in the search bar.

Grustnogram is a way to show your heart instead of the heart-shaped button on Instagram.

Alexander Tokarev of the popular service, said “We are very sorry that many high-quality and well-known services in Russia are ending their work for different reasons.” Afisha Daily quoted Alexander Tokarev as saying. Grustnogram was created to support one another and grieve together.

Tokarev claimed that the project was the work of four people including two programmers who were freelance. He said that the app would be on Google (NASDAQ) Play at the beginning of next week, then later in the App Store.

Rossgram was supposed to launch in this week’s naming and design, however, its creators failed to publish a video prototype of the app hours after it had been scheduled for launch.
