(Reuters) – The Irkut MS-21 is Russia’s most important airliner project. This was due to sanctions preventing the sale of U.S.-made models, according to the RIA news agency.
This medium-range plane also called the MC-21 is expected to be in service later this year. It can hold more than 200 passengers. In December 2020, the plane was first flown with Russian-built turbofans.
RIA quoted Yuri Borisov (Deputy Prime Minister) as saying that the plane will now only be powered by PD-14 engines made by United Engine Corporation, which he stated would require expansion to improve its output.
Irkut Corporation is the manufacturer of this plane. It is part of United Aircraft Corporation. Rostec is Russia’s largest state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate.
