(Reuters) – The second day of federal jury deliberations in the case of the four men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ended on Tuesday. They are now weighing whether or not they were guilty of domestic terrorism.

A government prosecutor called the defendants “paranoid”, bent on starting a civil conflict by abducting Whitmer, and held Whitmer responsible for placing limitations on social and commercial activities as a result of COVID-19.

Defence attorneys claim that clients were pressured to talk about the plot and did not make any plans of their own.

This case spotlights two militant right-wing groups that emerged since the election of former President Donald Trump in 2016. This case also reveals the degree to which the Pandemic and the government’s efforts to contain it has become a wedge issue within American politics. It pushes some people to the extremes.

The kidnapping conspiracy charges have been filed against all four defendants, Adam Fox, Brandon Caserta and Barry Croft Jr. Fox, Croft, Harris and conspiring to misuse a weapon for mass destruction were also indicted.

Men could be sentenced to life in prison if they are convicted.

The 12-member jury concluded the first day without reaching a decision.

Jurors demanded Robert Jonker (U.S. District Judge) “What is a weapon?” This is an apparent reference towards the charge of weapon of mass destruction.

Jonker said that a weapon can be used to “destroy or injure someone or something” as opposed, the Detroit Free Press reported.

According to the indictment Fox was accused of ordering $4,000 worth explosives from an FBI agent who posed as a coconspirator. Fox and Harris are also accused of paying for the explosives.

Ty Garbin, Kalen Franks and Kalen Garbin were also initially charged. They both agreed to plea bargains and served as key witnesses during the trial. Garbin is serving a 6-year sentence. Franks will be sentencing soon.

Four men are currently on trial along with Garbin, Franks and others. Seventeen of the seven are being charged in state court.

After seeing discussions online that featured posts about violent overthrows of state governments, the FBI stated it began tracking the movement. This group was formed to remove the restrictions on business and social activities that were imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The prosecution also claimed they wanted to begin a second American Civil War. Defense attorneys, however, said that clients had been high on drugs and were more likely to talk than take action.

Harris, Caserta, and an undercover witness who gave evidence at the trial, were all members of the Wolverine Watchmen militia group, according to prosecutors. Croft was a member the “Three Percenters,” which is a far-right group. Fox also was a member.
