NEW YORK, (Reuters) – A lawsuit was filed by Donald Trump’s former company against New York City for cancelling a contract with a golf course after Trump supporters stormed into the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, 2021.
According to the lawsuit, Bill De Blasio’s administration improperly ended the contract when he was mayor of New York City. Since 2015, the Trump Organization managed Ferry Point’s Trump Golf Links in Bronx.
According to the city, Trump’s actions inciting the Riot were a part of cancelling the contract. These actions also compromised the facility’s ability attract professional golf championships.
Debra James of New York State Supreme Court, Manhattan wrote Friday that the contract did not require that the operator be able to host professional golf tournaments. James overturned a City ruling that had upheld the cancellation of the contract.
New York City Law Department spokesperson said that the Court had made a wrong decision. They are now reviewing all legal options.
Trump Organization, which manages residences, hotels, and golf courses around the globe, thanked the court and expressed gratitude for the “well-reasoned” decision that was based on facts and law. It also stated its delight in continuing to operate Ferry Point.
On Jan. 6, hundreds of Trump-supporters attacked the Capitol, interrupting formal congressional certification for President Joe Biden’s victory. Trump made incendiary claims about a stolen election, and his supporters were the ones who reacted to this.
This case is distinct from the New York State Attorney General’s civil investigation and parallel criminal investigation by the Manhattan District attorney’s office into Trump business practices. Each investigation focuses on whether Trump’s company misrepresented the value of real estate property to gain tax deductions or loans.
Trump denies any wrongdoings and calls the probes politically motivated.
