UberTuesday’s announcement stated that drivers and riders are not required to wear masks.
Uber stated that riders and drivers no longer need to use masks for Uber rides as of April 19, 2022. updated safety guidance on its website. “However, the CDC still recommends wearing a mask if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high transmission levels in your area.”
This change follows a Monday ruling by a Florida federal judge that the CDC had exceeded its authority to mandate masks for public transport. According to the Transportation Security Administration, masks won’t be enforced on public transportation. In fact, airlines such as United Airlines and Delta have declared that they are not required. Amtrak has also decided to make masks optional.
Uber claims that masks can make people feel more comfortable in certain situations, so riders and drivers should be respectful of each other’s choices.
Uber had the mask-requirement in place from early on in the pandemic.
Masks are still recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for public transport. The CDC extended federal regulations for public transport masks until May 3, prior to the ruling by the judge. This was due to rising incidences of the BA.2 Omicron Subvariant.
Lyft could not be reached immediately to confirm if the policy has been changed.
