BERLIN, (Reuters) – Prosecutors from Germany and Italy have searched for illegal defeat devices to rig emission readings that are compliant with European Union regulations.

German prosecutors stated Wednesday in a statement that they are investigating the people responsible for Suzuki’s global No. 4 vehicle manufacturer Stellantis (MI) and Japanese automotive parts producer Marelli.

Eurojust is Europe’s Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation. The search operations are taking place in Germany, Italy, and Hungary.

Eurojust stated that the raids were carried out “to combat the use of defective emission devices in engine, which are used in vehicles of a Japanese manufacturer.”

According to the agency, “The devices were apparently fitted into the diesel engines made in Italy of large numbers cars and gave the impression that their nitrogen oxide emissions were consistent with EU regulations.”

According to the agency, the engines were assembled at a Hungarian production facility.

Japan’s Suzuki has declined to comment, as its European headquarters is in Germany.

Stellantis, Marelli didn’t immediately reply to our requests for comment.

Volkswagen’s “dieselgate”, the most severe case of its kind, was the result of the illegal use or defeat device software.

Volkswagen admits to using the software for rigging diesel engine tests. It also stated that there were 11 million affected vehicles around the world. The scandal has already cost Volkswagen more than $40 Billion in vehicle repairs, fines, and provision for legal actions.
