MADRID, Reuters – Spanish people splashed water at fountains on Saturday after the heat reached 40 Celsius in certain parts of Spain.
National weather agency AEMET posted on Twitter: “The morning of May 21st was exceptionally warm for this time of year in most of the center and south of Peninsula.”
The warning came in the form of temperatures high alerts for 10 Spanish regions on Saturday. Temperatures were expected to rise as high as 30 degrees.
Friday’s May temperatures records in Jaen, Andalusia were broken by 40C.
According to AEMET, Jaen’s average temperature was 16C warmer than the normal for that time of year. Temperatures were also higher elsewhere in Spain at 7C or more than normal.
Rocio Vazquez (58), a Madrid street sweeper, worked in direct sunlight wearing a mask.
She said, “This year it appears to have moved directly to summer,” but she must keep on going. It’s hot, but we have to do our jobs.
Ruben Del Campo, spokesperson for AEMET, stated that it was possible to have the May heatwave, if official confirmation is made.
He said, “This episode was very unusual for May and could have been one of the most intense episodes over the past 20 years.”
A group of Andalusian women arrived in Cordoba to celebrate a hen celebration. One was dressed up as a pink Flamingo and another had brought her from Madrid.
Bea Ovejero (31) said, “It’s really hot. We’re (battling) it with a lot water.”
