(Reuters) – The jury will commence deliberations regarding the two defamation lawsuits filed by actors Johnny Depp & Amber Heard. They have received six weeks worth of evidence and testimony, which included explicit and graphic information about their relationship.
Heard was sued by the star of “Pirates of the Caribbean”, 58, in Virginia. He claimed that she made a mockery of her when she said she was “a public figure representing domestic violence.”
Heard (36), counter-sued for $100,000,000, claiming Depp misrepresented her, when her lawyer called her claims a “hoax”.
Before the jury is seated, closing arguments will be delivered by both attorneys on Friday. If jurors fail to reach a verdict by Friday night, Judge Penney Azcarate stated that they would reconvene on Tuesday. The two met on “The Rum Diary,” in 2011, and were married in February 2015. They divorced two years later.
Jurors have heard six weeks worth of hearings about the arguments between the couples, listened to their fights and seen photos of bloody fingers. They also hear arguments over feces that were found in the beds of the partners.
Depp claimed that Heard had thrown a vodka glass at him, cutting off his finger’s top during an argument back in 2015. Heard said that Heard did not injure Depp’s finger, and Depp sexually assaulted him with a bottle of liquor.
He claimed that Heard believed he or a close friend had left his feces on the bed in the wake of an argument over Heard being 30 years old. Heard claimed it most likely was one of their dogs.
Heard’s December 2018 Washington Post article is the centerpiece of this legal case. Although the article did not mention Depp’s name in it, his lawyer stated that Heard had been referring to Depp.
Depp was once a Hollywood star and said that Heard’s accusations cost him everything. Depp was placed on notice and replaced with the new film “Pirates,” a “Harry Potter” spinoff.
Heard’s lawyers argued that Heard told the truth, and that her opinion is protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Depp’s allegations also cost her work opportunities in Hollywood, according to them.
Depp lost an libel suit against The Sun two years ago, which was a British tabloid. It called Depp a “wifebeater.” Heard was repeatedly assaulted by him, according to a London High Court judge.
Because the Washington Post is published in Fairfax County Virginia, Depp’s attorneys filed the U.S. lawsuit. The newspaper is not being sued.
