LONDON, (Reuters) – The G20 leaders must present more ambitious climate actions plans for 2030, Britain’s Alok Singh, President of the upcoming United Nations COP26 conference on climate change, said Tuesday.
Sharma, who will be speaking less than one month prior to talks in Glasgow (Scotland), Sharma will try to put pressure on others who are yet to meet national greenhouse gas emission reduction goals under the “Nationally Determined Contributions”, which form the heart of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Each country is responsible for its own actions. Each of us must play our role. According to extracts from a speech, he said that climate is the key issue.
COP26 is a conference that began on Oct. 31. It aims at securing more ambitious action by the almost 200 countries which signed the 2015 Paris Agreement in order to limit global warming well below 2.0 degrees Celsius – and preferably 1.5C (2.7 degree Fahrenheit – higher than pre-industrial levels.
“COP26 will not be a mere photo op, nor a talk shop. This must be the place where the world puts itself on the right track to achieve climate change goals. That is the responsibility of leaders,” Sharma stated at Paris’s UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
It was leaders six years ago who promised the world this city would be great. It is the leaders who must keep that promise.
Sharma’s office also stated that it was important to make clear to investors and the public the need for new financing to assist countries affected by climate change. This will help them adapt to changing conditions.
