WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A congressional panel that is investigating the Jan. 6 deadly riot at Capitol declared on Wednesday it had issued a subpoena for Jeffrey Clark’s testimony and records. Clark was a former Justice Department senior officer who supported Donald Trump’s false election fraud claims.

Bennie Thompson (Democratic chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee) stated in a statement that the Select Committee needs to “understand all details regarding efforts within the previous administration to delay certification of 2020 election and amplify misinformation about election results.”

“We need to understand Mr. Clark’s role in these efforts at the Justice Department and learn who was involved across the administration. Thompson stated that the Select Committee expected Mr. Clark’s cooperation in our investigation.

Clark must comply with the subpoena and produce documents.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee issued a report stating that there is “credible evidence” Clark participated in attempts to disrupt the peaceful transition of power as he was serving at the Justice Department.

Clark’s attorney did not respond immediately to our request for comment.
