Investing.com — The U.S. stock market opened higher Thursday following encouraging economic data that showed labor market strength, and lower inflation at the factory gates than was feared.
The country saw mixed earnings from its largest banks, allowing for broad gains in the major indices. Both were up 1.0%, and 1.1% respectively.
The Labor Department stated earlier that the initial unemployment claims were at their lowest point since the beginning of the pandemic. They stood at 293,000. This marks the first time the number has been below 300,000 since March 2020. The announcement of a 0.5% increase in the producer price index for the month, and an 8.6% rise over the same period was equally important to a market that is obsessed about the inflation outlook. The latter is still the highest rate of factory gate inflation for many years. However, the numbers were both lower than anticipated and the monthly rate of price rises has slowed from earlier this year.
