HONG KONG (Reuters). -China Evergrande Group wired money to a trustee bank account on Thursday in order to pay a Sept. 23 bond interest payment. This was a source confirmed to Reuters. The deadline would have put the troubled developer in formal default.

Evergrande’s shares rose as high as 8.8% in the early hours of Friday. The company has more than $300B in debts.

These are the opinions of people about the most indebted person on earth, and how their fate might impact global markets.

There is still much scepticism. The bond prices haven’t risen much. They’ll keep trying until it stops.

“The property market is very important because there are many construction projects. If they stop, the worst thing would happen. That could cause spillover effects on the economy. They bought some time for themselves.”

“That Evergrande has been able to fulfill its obligation following the grace period is positive in the short-term, as it shows that the company is committed and gives relief to investors who are interested in offshore bonds.

They still have deadlines to meet before March 31st. In order to fulfill all obligations, including bond coupon payments, they will still require liquidity. They can get it from their own resources or offload assets. Even though Evergrande managed to repay the coupon this time, it’s still quite challenging for them to meet all their future obligations.”

Evergrande remains in grace for coupon payments. In the future, we will monitor Evergrande’s debt restructuring and coupon payments.

I expect that it also means that they plan to pay off the overseas bond coupons by the 29th. If you don’t plan to pay this one, then it doesn’t make sense. But, considering the cashflow issues of the company, it’s unclear how much longer they’ll be able to keep paying.

We don’t know how banks will finance stalled projects. But we do know that pre-sales of project are declining so the onshore company is not likely to supply cash to Evergrande in the near future. Hopson’s clear response from yesterday will likely mean that Evergrande could face lawsuits if it tries to buy Evergrande Property Services.

The Evergrande rebound Friday was still very small in comparison to the losses the stock suffered over the last few months. Many people are seeing this as a potential positive for the credit sector in property development. However, I believe Evergrande’s share price may be affected in the short term. There are still many upcoming interest payment that must be made.

Investors should remain cautious as this isn’t just about Evergrande. We are referring to the overall health of China’s property sector.
