LISBON, (Reuters) – Frances Haugen, a whistleblower, urged Mark Zuckerberg to resign and instead of focusing on a rebrand, in her first public speech since she released a trove containing damaging documents regarding Facebook’s (NASDAQ:). internal workings.

“It seems unlikely that the company would change, if [Mark Zuckerberg]Haugen stated that he “remains the CEO” at Monday’s opening night of Web Summit. This tech festival draws thousands of people to Lisbon, Portugal, each year.

Ex-Facebook product manager responded positively to questions about whether Zuckerberg should quit.

Meta, the social network with almost 3 billion users changed its name last week to reflect its focus on creating the “metaverse,” an open-source virtual community that will replace the mobile internet.

However, early adopters and users of virtual worlds called the metaverse deplored Facebook’s recent rebranding. They claimed it was an attempt to capitalize on the growing buzz about a concept that Facebook did not invent to divert attention from negative events.

Haugen commented on the new branding, saying that it was absurd given security concerns still to be addressed.

Haugen explained that Facebook has repeatedly chosen to expand and create new areas rather than stick the landing in what it’s already done. The crowd was animated and often gave her a round of applause.

The announcement by Facebook came amid fierce criticism from regulators and lawmakers over its business practices, including its market power and algorithmic decisions. It also raised concerns about the police enforcement of any abuses to its services.

Facebook operates a dual share structure that Zuckerberg, along with a few investors, controls. The social network has reacted by claiming the documents leaked to Haugen were used to portray a “false image.”

Haugen said last month to American and British legislators that Facebook will fuel violence around the globe unless it changes its algorithms, which promote extreme content and exploit vulnerable people in order to keep them scrolling.

Haugen stated that “A major problem is that the platform’s security foundation is based upon monitoring content language-by-language, which doesn’t scale to all of Facebook’s countries.”
