REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoJAKARTA, Reuters – The deployment of carbon capture storage in Indonesia (CCS), by the American energy giant Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:) may cost around $500 million according to Pertamina’s senior executive on Monday.
Pertamina was joined by Exxonmobil in a memorandum d’accord at last week’s COP26 summit to discuss ways CCS could be applied in the largest nation of Southeast Asia, Exxonmobil.
CNBC Indonesia’s Daniel Purba told CNBC Indonesia that the Pertamina senior vice president for corporate strategy said, “Our provisional estimate of investment needs is approximately $500 million. This excludes operating costs which will be incurred while CCS operations are ongoing.”
Purba indicated that CCS facilities were likely to be used in Indonesian oil and gas fields. These are the Gundih in Cepu, and the Sukowati in Bojonegoro.
Exxonmobil’s spokesperson didn’t immediately reply to my request for comment.
Pertamina, Exxonmobil and Sukowati would need to create a four-kilometer (2.49 miles), gas pipeline that runs from Gundih and a reservoir. They would then inject the carbon into the reservoir.
CCS is a technology that traps gases and places them underground. However, it has not reached the stage of commercialisation.
CCS supporters see it as crucial to meet net zero emission and to enable large-scale, economic hydrogen production. CCS critics argue that it will prolong the lives of fossil fuels.
Indonesia, eighth biggest carbon emitter worldwide, set a goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.
