REUTERS/Ann WangTAIPEI (Reuters), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd., the world’s biggest contract chipmaker, claimed Monday that in response to a U.S. request for chip data, it did not disclose any details about clients.
TSMC is one of many companies (including South Korea’s Samsung Electronics OTC:) that the U.S. government asked for information to help it better understand global chip shortage. The deadline to submit the information is Nov. 8.
The U.S. request has raised industry concerns over trade secrets. Two sources last week said that the two largest South Korean memory chip manufacturers, as well as two other companies, plan to withhold detailed information from Washington when they supply data.
TSMC is a key supplier of Apple Inc (NASDAQ) semiconductors. It stated that it responded to the U.S. request for help to solve the problem.
TSMC stated that it was “committed” to maintaining confidentiality for customers and ensuring customer-specific information does not get disclosed.
They did not offer any more details.
Gina Raimondo (US Secretary of Commerce) stated in September that the inquiry was meant to increase transparency within supply chains. The Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo warned that if companies do not respond to the request, “then they have other tools in their toolbox that require them give us data.”
Taiwan is a technology powerhouse and has declared that it will do everything possible to address the problem of chip shortages. TSMC will spend $100 billion in the next three year to improve chip capacity.
Taiwan’s government confirmed that the country respects U.S. commerce law, and would still support local firms in case they were made “unreasonable requests.”
