Brazil disputes EU poultry imports measure at WTO -Breaking

BRASILIA, Reuters – Brazil requested consultations at the World Trade Organization in a dispute about EU measures affecting imports of turkey meat with pepper and salted chicken meat.
Brazil’s Foreign Ministry stated that it is hopeful the talks lead to a peaceful resolution of what it calls “discriminatory sanitation controls for the detection salmonella”, which create “unjustified obstacles” to international commerce.
This request is the first step of a WTO dispute and was sent to members Thursday.
Brazil claims that EU salmonella food safety guidelines on chicken meat are incompatible with the WTO Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.
Brazil stated that it believes there is not enough scientific or technical evidence for the European Union to apply stricter microbiological standards to detect salmonella in fresh chicken meat.
