WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Congress committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol threatened the White House Chief of Staff with a criminal contempt referral if he didn’t appear before it and turn over the required documents by Friday morning.

Representative Bennie Thompson, the Democratic chair of the House of Representatives Select Committee, wrote that Mark Meadows will not be producing the documents nor will he appear before the committee at 10 AM EST (1500 GMT) to testify.

The committee announced in September that it had subpoenaed https://www.reuters.com/world/us/congressional-probe-us-capitol-riot-subpoenas-bannon-meadows-2021-09-23 Meadows, citing reports the former House member had communicated with state and federal officials – including members of Congress – as part of an effort to overturn the Republican Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election by Democrat Joe Biden.

The company stated that Meadows would be required to give evidence and documents within the deadline of mid-October. Both sides were in negotiation since then.

Thompson claimed Meadows did not produce any document. “Though you stated previously that your firm had searched records Mr. Meadows gave to you, you have not completed your review,” George Terwilliger wrote in a letter to Meadows’ lawyer.

Thompson indicated that Meadows may be charged with criminal contempt for willful failure to obey its subpoena.

The House voted last month https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-house-edges-toward-contempt-charges-against-trump-aide-bannon-2021-10-21 to hold Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon in contempt and refer his case to Justice.

Terwilliger didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment. On Thursday, Terwilliger had made a statement suggesting that Meadows wouldn’t cooperate until any legal issues were settled.

Trump has filed suit https://www.reuters.com/world/us/judge-hear-trump-bid-stonewall-us-capitol-riot-investigation-2021-11-04 to avoid turning over White House documents and urged former aides to reject subpoenas.
