(Reuters. Iran calls for depoliticization by the U.N. Nuclear Watchdog. France had previously urged the organization to “send a clear message to Tehran” regarding disputed nuclear activities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s 35-nation governing board is due to begin meeting on Nov. 24 in Vienna, five days before talks are due to resume on reviving Iran’s nuclear deal with global powers.

The U.N. could complain that Iran is not cooperating with its monitors. This might make it harder to revive the accord, which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions.

Iran, as an international Atomic Energy Agency member responsible, has stressed that IAEA’s reputation for being a technical and specialist body of United Nations must not be subject to any political conduct.” A statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry was posted on a Twitter feed.

Anne-Claire Legendre, spokeswoman of the French Foreign Ministry had stated on Thursday that the watchdog’s governing body should act after reports from agencies highlighted problems over Tehran’s nuclear program. While the West fears it may have military purposes, Tehran claims it is peaceful.

IAEA reports Wednesday revealed that Iran has not yet granted IAEA inspectors the access it promised to two months ago in order to reinstall surveillance cameras in a workshop which was the scene of apparent sabotage.

Legendre stated that Iran must immediately fulfill all of its obligations and commitments to the IAEA and resume cooperation with it in order to fully implement the 2015 nuclear agreement.

It was unclear what her strong message meant. Diplomats believe it unlikely that the West will take any action against Iran prior to the restart of negotiations for the nuclear agreement.

After Tehran had agreed to extend monitoring of certain nuclear activities, and after the IAEA chief Rafael Grossi was invited to Tehran to discuss their plans for an IAEA resolution rebuking Iran in September, Western countries scrapped those plans. Grossi will be back in Tehran for the IAEA board meeting.
