Eric Adams, New York City’s Mayor-elect is looking at a Goldman SachsPeople familiar with this matter say that executive sought a job in the administration.
Adams has been talking to his friends about the possibility of giving Stephen Scherr (Goldman’s chief finance officer) a position as a leader in the new administration. The people did not want to reveal their identities in order to keep private conversations going.
Scherr will be retiring from Goldman Sachs in New York at the end the year. co-chair of Adams’ transition team.According to people, he may be in line for the post of deputy mayor for economic and housing development. He also could lead the New York City Economic Development Corp.
Adams has not yet made public statements about who he’ll choose to fill these positions. His swearing-in date of Jan. 1 is likely to be when he makes the final decisions. He is moving forward with plans for important positions such as asking New York Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) to become a deputy mayorNoting this he’s close to deciding the next police commissioner.
Adams would hire Scherr to show that he is trying to fulfill his promise to improve relationships between the city government and business leaders following a difficult eight-year tenure under Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Adams stated previously to CNBC that he had sent a message to New York’s business leaders: “Let’s reset.”
Scherr’s presence within an Adams administration would provide Goldman Sachs and other big companies with an ally in powerful government positions.
Goldman Sachs’ spokesman declined to comment. Adams’ spokesperson did not deny that Scherr’s name was being considered for Adams and others to join his administration. CNBC spoke with Evan Thies on Monday night to confirm that Adams thanked Scherr for his assistance in transitioning the administration so it could be ready by Day 1.
Scherr has important roles to play in the city’s economy, as well relationships with both employers and workers.
NYCEDC (Nonprofit Organization for Economic Development and Community) is charged with ensuring that the city’s economy is sustainable, creates jobs, and is equitable. The group’s board and president are appointed by Mayor Bloomberg.
It is the job of the deputy mayor for economic and housing development to create and implement policies that have a direct impact on the economy.
Scherr is a Goldman Sachs employee since the mid 1990s. Scherr is a member the management committee of Goldman and the chief financial officers since 2018. The data from the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan organization, shows that Scherr donated mainly to Democrats. including to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign for president.
Goldman Sachs is a well-known source for elected officials as well as high-ranking employees of the government.
Hank Paulson was tapped by former President George W. Bush to serve as his Treasury Secretary. Gary Cohn was another Goldman executive who Trump chose to serve as his first director for the National Economic Council. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (Democrat) is also a former Goldman Executive.
