WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate voted 68 to 31 on Tuesday to confirm Jessica Rosenworcel as chair of the Federal Communications Commission for a five-year term.
Rosenworcel (50), a pioneer of broadband access for low income American households, and a key figure in net neutrality, was named by President Joe Biden as the FCC’s first female permanent chair.
There is still work to be done to ensure modern communication reaches everyone everywhere. Let’s move on,” Rosenworcel tweeted (NYSE:) following the Senate vote.
Biden has waited for nine months before he made nominations to the FCC. Some issues have not been addressed by the commission, which has one vacant seat and is split 2-2 between Republicans and Democrats.
Biden may nominate Democrat Gigi Sing to the open seat in his Senate Commerce Committee vote as soon as December 15.
Sohn was a senior adviser to Tom Wheeler and served as FCC Chairman under President Barack Obama. He stated that it would take the FCC at least one year to restore neutrality rules which were repealed under Donald Trump in 2017.
FCC in 2015 adopted net neutrality regulations that prohibited internet service providers from blocking, throttling or charging for fast lanes.
Sohn stated this month at an hearing, “I am concerned that broadband has been without any oversight over the past four years,” Sohn added.
Sohn stated that she doesn’t support net neutrality rules for regulating internet prices.
Rosenworcel wrote in comments, that she did not intend to regulate broadband rates direct or indirect.
