LONDON (Reuters – Boris Johnson is facing a revolt from Conservative politicians Tuesday during a parliamentary vote on new restrictions that will try to stop the spread of Omicron coronavirus variant.

Johnson relies on the Labour Party opposition for votes, but parliament is expected to approve these measures.

This is yet another blow for a prime minister who was already in trouble over reports of parties at his Downing Street office last January when such gatherings were prohibited.

Many of his legislators believe the restrictions are too harsh. Some were angry about the introduction COVID passports (vaccination certification) to allow entry to certain venues like night clubs.

David Jones, former minister and Conservative lawmaker, stated that “it is very wrong” that individuals should have to produce what is basically a medical ID card to gain access to services.

Although it is important to encourage people to receive the vaccine, ultimately they have to be responsible for their own health. A two-tier society is one that denies unvaccinated persons access to services. He told Reuters that this isn’t the kind of country we would like to live in.

The lawmakers will start a series of consecutive votes starting at 1830 GMT on all measures.

Omicron is a strain that causes more than 40% in London. The measures taken by the government are intended to control its spread.

A single person died from the variant, and there have been 10 Omicron-positive patients in England.

To win back the Conservative rebels, the government says that anyone who has not been double-jabbed may instead provide proof of negative lateral flow testing to get access to indoor venues for more than 500 persons.

On Monday, the spokesperson said that “on the issue of certification…it requires proof of the negative test unless your are double vaccinated. And it allows us keep some of those settings open which is vital to hospitality.”
