COVID-19 vaccines may be less effective against Omicron

GENEVA (Reuters – Some preliminary evidence suggests that COVID-19 vaccines might be less effective in preventing infection and transmission related to Omicron coronavirus variant. This variant also carries a greater risk of reinfection. The World Health Organization stated Wednesday.

In its weekly epidemiological updates, the WHO said more data were needed in order to fully understand Omicron’s ability to evade immune system derived from previous infections or vaccines.

According to it, “As such, the overall risk associated with the new Omicron variant of concern Omicron is very high.”
