NFL and NBA lead new Covid outbreaks in sports

Professional sports leagues continue to feel the effects of Covid, with postponements increasing and stars being unable to play.
This week, more than 100 people from the National Football League and National Basketball Association entered safety and health protocols.
On Monday and Tuesday alone, more than 70 NFL players tested positive for Covid. This is well ahead of the 72 cases that the NFL reported Dec. 2, for the time period Nov. 14 through Nov. 27, 2012. Seventeen teams have been placed in enhanced mitigation protocols. These require additional testing and more stringent prevention rules. Additionally, the Washington Football Team’s staff tested positive for the newly identified omicron variant. World health officials claim that this strain spreads faster than any other Covid.
Although it’s unlikely that leagues will panic as in March 2020, where the NBA suspended all games for the entire season, concern is growing about the rising popularity of the micron version.

NFL mandates booster shots
As it approaches the close of the regular season, the NFL tightens its Covid guidelines and prepares to host its first playoff rounds in February before Super Bowl LIV takes place on February 6th in Los Angeles.
CNBC viewed a Monday NFL memo that indicated that all tier 1 or tier 2 team personnel (coaches, front-office staff and others) should receive booster shots no later than Dec. 27, according to CNBC.
Meanwhile, stars such as Odell Bettham of the Rams were placed on the Covid, sending them into more intensive protocols. Positive tests led to the Rams being accepted into the improved protocols of the Washington Football Team, Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings. All players must comply with the guidelines, which require them to undergo daily testing and hold virtual team meetings. Individuals who are positive for league rules can be isolated and not allowed to enter team facilities. They also cannot have any contact with personnel or players.
Brian McCarthy, a spokesperson for the NFL, said Wednesday that they are continuing to hold discussions with their medical experts as well as the NFLPA. He sent an email to CNBC on Wednesday morning. “As last year, as we do every year, we’re flexible and adaptable. This is why we will continue to make improvements based on new guidance that ensures the safety and well-being of all NFL personnel.”

Covid could halt the NBA’s momentum
