REUTERS/Willy Kurniawan(Reuters) – Three doses Sinovac CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine failed to produce sufficient levels of antibodies against the Omicron strain of coronavirus according to Hong Kong researchers.
The analysis showed that the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine proved to be more effective than the Chinese Sinovac vaccine. A third shot of Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, administered following two doses of either the China Sinovac vaccine or the identical vaccine in China provided “protective levels of anti-Omicron antibody.”
Pfizer (NYSE:) BioNTech, its German partner, has claimed that their three-shot course in neutralizing Omicron was effective in laboratory tests.
Researchers from both the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong conducted the latest study, which was funded by the Health and Medical Research Fund and Government of Hong Kong.
It did not specify how many samples were used for the analysis. Sinovac didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment.
Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccine and Sinopharm state-owned Sinopharm BBIBP–CorV vaccine are two of the most widely used vaccines in China. They also make up the top COVID-19 vaccines that China exports. Sinopharm also offers a second vaccine for China.
The Sinovac and Pfizer BioNTech shots have been used in Hong Kong. Only people between 12 and 17 years old are eligible for the BioNTech vaccine.
