JAKARTA, Reuters – Indonesia’s ban on Boeing’s (NYSE:) 737 MAX will be lifted, according to the Southeast Asian country’s transport ministry. This was three years after Lion Air, a local carrier, lost one of its planes during a domestic routine flight.

The flight crashed into the Java Sea just after taking off on October 18, 2018. This resulted in the deaths of 189 people. The Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX was also involved in a similar tragedy that caused aviation officials around the globe to ground it.

It was approved for the return of the vehicle months after it returned to US service. This follows recent lifts of grounding orders in Australia, Japan and other countries such as India, Malaysia and Singapore.

According to Indonesia’s transportation ministry, after an examination of any changes made to the aircraft system, the ban will be lifted.

The statement said that pilots from Indonesian-based airlines would need to complete additional simulator training in order to fly again the aircraft.

Lion Air was privately owned and operated ten 737 MAX aircrafts prior to the ban. However, they did not respond immediately to a request for comments.

Garuda Indonesia’s national flag carrier stated that the company had no plans of reintroducing the aircraft to its fleet while it focuses on ongoing debt restructuring, Irfan Setiaputra, chief executive told Reuters.

According to the state-controlled airline that had previously operated one 737 MAX prior to the ban, it said it would reduce its fleet to 62 planes.
