U.S. Mission GenevaMOSCOW (Reuters – Russia’s Deputy Foreign Ministry Sergei Ryabkov will be leading security negotiations in Geneva on January 10, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. This was amid increasing tensions regarding Ukraine.
Russia then plans to meet with NATO in Brussels, Jan. 12, and then a larger meeting which includes Russia, the United States, and other European countries in Vienna on Jan. 13. Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated that this would occur in Vienna.
Russia has increased tensions with Western nations by deploying tens to thousands of soldiers near the border of Ukraine and Belarus in just two months. Moscow has denied plans to attack Ukraine but claims that it does have the rights to send its troops wherever it pleases.
Moscow has expressed concern over what it believes is West’s rearming of Ukraine and demanded legally-binding NATO guarantees regarding the NATO military alliance’s eastern expansion plans.
According to Maria Zakharova (Russia’s spokesperson for the foreign ministry), “During the negotiations we will seek solid legal guarantees from the U.S. Side regarding Russia’s security, namely, that NATO will never move eastwards, and that no weapons systems threatening Russia won’t be deployed near our border,” a briefing was held on Thursday.
January 13th talks will include the Vienna-based Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which includes Russia, Ukraine, and other exSoviet countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to call his counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday at 2030 GMT.
