BEIJING, (Reuters) – The Chinese city in Xian was placed under lockdown for ten days on Saturday. This is because the COVID-19 epidemic has not subsided at the epicenter of this latest outbreak.

According to National Health Commission data, 174 local patients with clinically confirmed symptoms were reported in the city of 13,000,000 people on Dec. 31, up from 161 one day earlier.

This brings the total number of transmissions in the community to 1,451 since Dec. 9, when the initial local outbreak of the disease was first reported.

The flight from Pakistan that brought about the Xian disease, which caused other outbreaks in cities like Beijing, is what can be credited for the Xian virus epidemic. However, it’s not known how this spread to the local community.

Many residents have been prohibited from leaving their residences, however, an official of the city government stated that curbs would be lifted in more risky areas once it was appropriate.

Li Jiaxin (23-year old postgraduate student) said no one should leave campus. The 23-year-old Li Jiaxin spent the New Year with her roommates, but was not able to see her boyfriend or family.

She said that she had thought of going out with her boyfriend, some friends and to see a film (on New Years Eve) and then having a drink and something.

“I might be someone you’d consider to have a strong sense for ritual. But, I feel sad that we don’t get together right now.”

China had 231 newly confirmed cases in December, up from 195 the day prior. The National Health Commission reported that 175 of the infections were localized, as opposed to 166 the day before.

One of the new 175 local cases was found in Xian. It is the capital of Shaanxi, the northern province.

No new deaths were reported, so the national death toll remained unchanged at 4,636.

As of Friday, Mainland China had 102 314 confirmed cases, an increase of 15,243 over the 87 071 cases of December 31, 2020.
